Learn how to draw a realistic capybara with graphite pencils! In this step-by-step tutorial, I go from a light sketch to fur texture, shadows and a simple background. Watch the video, then follow the written steps and screenshots below. The video is sped up: the drawing took me about 48 minutes in real time.

Materials

  • 3B, HB and 2H graphite pencils
  • Canson artist sketchbook
  • Kneaded eraser and regular eraser

1. Lightly sketch the outline of the body and the main shapes

Start with very pale lines to place the overall shape of the capybara on the page. Keep your pressure light: these construction lines are only guides and will be covered by fur later.

2. Draw the eyes, nose and ears

Add the face first: the eyes, the muzzle and the ears. Take your time placing these features, because the face gives the whole drawing its character.

The eyes, muzzle and ears bring the face to life

3. Draw the fur outline of the body

Trace the outline of the body with short, uneven strokes instead of one smooth line. The rough edge already suggests fur.

4. Draw the paws

Add the front paws, with their small toes and claws.

5. Add more detail along the body outline

Go back over the outline and add small strokes of fur that follow the direction of hair growth, especially along the back and the chest.

Step 5 how to draw a capybara in pencil - More fur details drawn along the outline of the capybara body
More fur strokes refine the outline of the body

6. Add fur over the whole body to create texture

Fill the body with fur strokes that follow the direction of growth, starting from the face and working outward. Build the texture with many light strokes rather than a few heavy ones.

Step 6 how to draw a capybara in pencil - Fur texture drawn with pencil strokes over the whole capybara body
Light fur strokes cover the whole body

7. Add more detail to the paws

Return to the paws to refine the toes, the claws and the fur above them, so they match the level of detail of the rest of the body.

The paws are refined with more detail

8. Add darker fur and shadows for depth

Now add contrast. Use darker pencil strokes for the fur in the shaded areas, such as under the chin, around the face and along the underside of the body. Dark values placed next to lighter areas create relief and make the fur look three-dimensional.

Step 8 how to draw a capybara in pencil - Darker fur and shadows drawn in pencil to give the capybara depth
Darker fur and shadows give the capybara volume

9. Finish the outlines

Strengthen the final outlines where needed so the shape of the capybara stays clear against the paper.

The final outlines strengthen the shape of the capybara

10. Clean up the drawing and add a simple background

Lightly erase the construction lines you no longer need. A kneaded eraser lifts graphite gently without damaging the paper. Then add a few details around the animal, such as a cast shadow and small marks on the ground, to anchor it on the page.

A cast shadow and small ground marks complete the drawing
